Learn to speak English like a native

In this post, we share a few key steps to help you learn to speak English like a native speaker.

Fluency is every language learner’s ultimate goal. All learners hope they can become almost indistinguishable from a native speaker, but they are often told that if they didn’t start learning the language as a child, they will never be as good as a native speaker. This is simply not true! It is absolutely possible to master native-like English with a few tricks.

Be confident! Don’t be deceived by the notion that you cannot master the language because you’re not a native speaker. The truth is, native speakers make many mistakes, both while speaking and writing. We often use incorrect sentence structures and can at times have a surprisingly limited vocabulary. This does not stop us from speaking confidently!

Listen and repeat! Listening and repeating is key. This is how you will pick up phrases and learn how to speak more naturally in English. Either listen to a native speaker friend or watch an English video and imitate the pronunciation. If you can make the correct sounds and say the right words you will sound like a native English speaker. Pay some attention to the movement of the mouth, to the flow of their sentences, and to their pauses. With much practice and mouth muscle training exercises you might even reduce your accent a little.

Study idioms, expressions and phrasal verbs! Learn and practice idioms, expressions and phrasal verbs. These are essential to express your thoughts and ideas in a way only a true master of the language can.

Learn from native speakers! All Things English recommends italki which is a language learning platform that allows you to learn English on your own terms. Italki connects you with English teachers and native speakers that will guide your language learning process, correct your pronunciation and help you improve your weaknesses, so you achieve native-like mastery of the language as quickly as possible. On Italki, you can book a class from wherever you want, whenever you want. You won’t have to commit to a structured, regular classroom environment: learn when you have free time.
